Born, raised and educated in Sedalia, John is a 1971 graduate of Central Missouri University with a B.S. in Business Administration, and a December 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He is a former judge and served as acting chairman of the Missouri Labor & Industrial Relations Commission under Governor Bob Holden.

John is also a member of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) panel of workers' compensation attorneys and has been recognized for membership in Super Lawyers of Missouri for several years.
